RDC sees need for irrigation infra

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (2 February) -- The private sector is proposing for a prioritized irrigation infrastructure as the Regional Development Council lays out priority projects this year.

During the Kapihan sa SM yesterday (February1), RDC representative for Crops and Grains Louie Rabat said that irrigation should come as a priority in the government's budget.

In the series of consultations with the private sector, clamor for a rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructure came out.

"We want more canals for our farmers since there are so many farm areas in Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental which needs improvement in their irrigation canals," Rabat said.

Rabat added that a project on irrigation is the answer to the possible effects of climate change in the farm lands. The government has to weigh if road infrastructure or irrigation infrastructure is what the farmers really need at the moment.

The RDC is mandated as required by the Investment Coordinating Committee (ICC), to review and endorse projects of national government agencies that have impact on the region and projects of LGUs in the region requiring national government financial exposure which may come in the form of guarantees, national government budget appropriations or subsidies.

It is also tasked to promote and direct the inflow and allocation of private investments in the region to support regional development objectives, policies and strategies.

"This time, we need synergy, we need to carefully identify funds of the government as well as the identified projects needed by the community. Then the RDC comes in to act as referee to link these identified funds and identified projects," Rabat said. (PIA XI) [top]
