Search for outstanding teachers set

by RG Alama

Davao City (2 February) -- The Metrobank Foundation in partnership with the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education will be launching the 2010 Search for Outstanding Teachers.

The Search gives recognition upon the teaching profession bestowing honors to teachers who manifest deep commitment to the development of the youth through exemplary competence, remarkable dedication to their work and effective educational leadership.

Southern Mindanao region has produced at least six Search awardees representing 2.1% of the total number of 286 awardees since 1985. During the 25th Search for Outstanding Teacher last year, Mrs. Rochelle Papasin, Special Science Teacher IV of the Philippine National Science High School-Southern Mindanao Campus was awarded as one of the outstanding teachers.

The search is open to all full-time teachers in the elementary, secondary and higher education levels from both public and private schools in the country who have been actively teaching for the last 10 years.

Winners of other searches for outstanding teachers conducted by reputable organizations and institutions at the local, national or international levels automatically will qualify for the second-round provided that they meet the basic requirements of tenure, performance and teaching load and have passed the levels of screening.

Elementary schools can now have two nominees; one from the primary grades (kinder to Grade 3) and one from the intermediate grades (Grades 4 to 7). High Schools and colleges/universities including state universities and colleges (SUCs) with satellite campuses which are not autonomous are entitled to nominate only one teacher for the secondary and higher education categories.

Winners will receive a cash prize of P300, 000, a specially-designed trophy and medal to be awarded by the Philippine President in Malacanang. The teacher's school will receive a plaque of recognition.
