PGMA in Davao to highlight cyber corridor at Damosa IT Park

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (4 February) -- After Laguna and Cebu, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo visited the Concentrix call center facility at the Damosa IT Park, this city, as part of her week-long tour to highlight this administration's cyber corridor project.

The tour includes Baguio, Metro Manila, Clark and Davao and Cebu, which Arroyo cited in her State of the Nation Address as a major contributor to the growth of the BPO industry in the country.

President Arroyo toured the facilities of Concentrix, a global company with award-winning expertise in providing business processing support services. It has locations in China, Japan, United States, and Central America accommodating over 4,500 employees.

Players from the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) industry briefed her on the status of the cyber corridor project in Davao City, being chosen as the cyber corridor hub in Mindanao.

ICT Davao President Lisabel Holganza presented that ICT in Davao has grown from offering 1,171 IT-related jobs in 2001 to more than 6,000 jobs in 2009.

"We are expecting these figures to reach 30,000 by 2015. We simply need to make Davao friendly to potential investors and urge them to set up more locators here," Holganza said.

Davao is identified as the cyber hub in Mindanao for it has the most number of locators with 60 BPOs or ICT-related companies spread over the city.

She explained that despite high demand of call center workers, Davao has not yet filled up the requirement.

The ICT players in Davao told President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo that Davao still needs sites accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. Most of the potential locations identified by investors could hardly keep up the time requirement of the investors which usually caused the delay or the location transfer of most of the BPOs.

"This is why we very much need the support of the national and the local government." she explained.

She asked the national government more subsidies in the form of scholarships and employment opportunities since most of these were said to be captured and absorbed in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The local government, on its part, is urged to improve its incentives code by way of providing non-fiscal incentives. This includes tax exemptions for ICT companies and employees working in the IT industry. (PIA XI) [top]
