Magsaysay Park as hub of Chinatown festival

by RG Alama

Davao City (11 February) -- Magsaysay Park will be the main center of the coming Davao Chinese New Year Festival held by the Davao City Chinatown Development Council.

Flea markets and bazaars will be set up in the park which is adjacent to Davao's Chinatown district which encompasses the areas along Ramon Magsaysay Avenue (formerly Uyanguren), Monteverde Ave., Sta. Ana Ave., and Leon Garcia Street.

Formerly the flea market was set up along Uyanguren street however the area was deemed too small for the activity hence it was set up inside the park. According to City Tourism Officer Giovanni Aportadera, the roads leading to the park will be lined with Chinese lanterns.

Opening ceremonies for the Chinese New Year which will usher in the Year of the Tiger will be on February 12 on Friday. On February 13, Saturday, the New Year countdown will feature different Chinese cultural and musical presentations, parlor games and a lion dance that will be held from 4pm to 12 midnight.

The popular bazaar and flea market will open on the first day of the Chinese New Year (Feb. 14).

Meanwhile the City Government has allocated a P30-million budget to improve and develop Magsaysay Park, which was formerly leased for 25 years by the Philippine Tourism Authority before it was turned over to the local government. (PIA XI) [top]
