PIA Press Release

DOLE 6 releases P18-M for livelihood projects in 2009

Iloilo City (15 February) -- Close to P18 million have already been released by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Western Visayas in 2009 to finance various livelihood projects to provide and augment income of workers and their families in the region.

In its press report, DOLE 6 said that the amount funded some 49 approved livelihood projects to assist a total of 4,458 workers in the formal and informal economy and the unemployed.

The projects aimed to enhance the workers' existing livelihood, restore their lost livelihood resources due to natural calamities, and enable them to engage in livelihood undertakings which are in line with the job generation thrust of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

It will be recalled that in 2008, DOLE 6 also released some P16.17 million to fund 51 approved projects of 3,628 workers in the formal and informal economy and the unemployed.

DOLE 6 Regional Director Aida Estabillo said in the press report that she will activate the region's monitoring teams to ensure the success and sustainability of all their funded livelihood projects in the region.

Early last year, Estabillo created the monitoring teams for Panay and Negros Occidental composed of people from the technical and accounting divisions to monitor and evaluate all funded projects in 2008.

She said the team's findings last year enabled her office to address the many problems encountered by the beneficiaries before and during the project's implementation.

The monitoring team is set to start its monitoring activities next month and Estabillo said "this year, we will double our efforts in monitoring new and existing projects to ensure their success and sustainability." (PIA) [top]
