Feature: The perks of a 4Ps parent leader
Buguis, Jose Abad Santos, Davao Del Sur (16 February) -- Lorena Malila, 39 years old, is a 4Ps recipient of Barangay Buguis. Buguis is the second barangay in the Northern part of Jose Abad Santos. It is a 30-minute motorcycle ride from the poblacion. Lorena is a full-time housewife who takes care of her three children. Her husband Ramon works as a fisherman.
Lorena shared that prior to 4Ps her daily routine would just be to do the household chores, take care of her children and other usual thing a housewife is expected to do for her family. She also shared that her husband's income is oftentimes not enough to pay for all the household expenses and her children's educational needs."Dili man gud permanente pud ang kita anang mananagat. Usahay wala gyud ilabi na kung dako kaayo ang balod (A fisherman's income is not definite. There are days that he does not earn anything)," laments Lorena.
When Jose Abad Santos, Davao del Sur was identified by DSWD as one of the 4Ps municipality recipients, Lorena was skeptical. "Murag imposible ra kaayo nga matinood ni nga programa (This program is just too good to be true)," Lorena wearied. She continued on with their diurnal routine not minding 4Ps.
Lorena shed out her doubts when she received her first cash grant in June 2009. She could not believe her very eyes when she first held the P 1,300 given by the program that is intended for her children's health and education needs.
On its 8th month of implementation in Jose Abad Santos, Lorena was chosen as a parent leader in her barangay. "Nalipay gyud ko nga napili ko nga parent leader, wala ko magdahom nga sobra-sobra ang ihatag nga oportunidad sa akoa sa 4Ps (I am very happy that I was chosen as a parent leader, I did not expect that 4Ps will give me so much opportunity)," Lorena lilted.
Lorena has 32 members in her cluster. They conduct Family Development Sessions twice a month. Lorena shared that she reminds her members on the conditionalities that they need to comply. She added that they should not go weary of the government because it gave them 4Ps and the chance to perform their duties as responsible parents to their children.
Like Lorena, Teresita Sendrejas, 47 years old, was also selected as a parent leader in their barangay, Mangile. Mangile is the 1st barangay in the North. It is a 45-minute motor ride from Caburan Big.
Teresita has three children, ages 10-14. Her husband, Anisito also works as fisherman in their village. Despite their financial struggle, they still strive to send their children to school. Teresita proudly shared that the all her three children are top 1 in their classes. "Isip inahan lami kaayo pamalandungon nga gapaningkamot pud ang imong mga anak nga makakat-on (As a mother, it is really nice to know that my children are also doing their best to learn)," she added.
As a parent leader, it taught Teresita how to effectively and efficiently manage a group. It did not only empower her, but also her members, on community involvement and responsible parenthood. She also imparts the importance of encouraging your child to learn and supporting them in their studies.
4Ps does not only provide cash subsidies for the children's health, nutrition and education needs but it also provided the much-needed confidence booster to housewives in Jose Abad Santos to be empowered parent leaders and responsible parents. (DSWD/Sanico) [top]
