Banay-banay takes on global warming advocacy

by JMD Abangan

Banay-Banay, Davao Oriental (18 February) -- Municipal Mayor Pedro T. Mejos used to walk around two kilometers either along the shorelines, along rice paddies or coconut farms, feeling the fresh cool breeze of this town.

"But now, it's so hot," Mejos shared his observation of how climate and weather conditions have changed these days.

Mejos is aware of the global concern regarding Earth's warming and climate change which is seen to bring impending devastation to all forms of life on earth including human.

Banay-banay is the rice granary of Davao Oriental, supplying markets of nearby towns and province with its widely known Banay-banay 7-tonner rice. Changes in climate experienced here have no observable adverse effects yet on its vast rice fields.

Knowing that the weather phenomenon would largely take toll on the agriculture sector, he wants students to keep themselves abreast of this phenomenon.

He also looks forward that students would grasp the idea of how they, together with their families, can help the local and national government lessen the adverse effects of global warming and climate change.

"We cannot do it alone," he said. "It would be good if students would tell their parents what's this all about and how they can help," he added.

Mejos, through the Community Development Information Office (CDIO) organized on February 16, a forum on Global Warming and Climate Change in coordination with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office and the Municipal Disaster Action Office.

More than 500 high school students of Banay-banay National High School attended the forum conducted in two batches?first was held in the morning at the high school covered court and the other was conducted at the covered court of the Municipal Hall.

Barangay Officials and barangay volunteers attended the afternoon session at the Municipal Hall.

Ma. Socorro Mallari of the Environment Management Bureau under the Department of Environment and Natural Resouces (DENR) XI gave the presentation on global warming and climate change. (PIA XI) [top]
