Davao Light encourages consumers to save on power usage
Davao City (25 February) -- Davao Light and Power Company is encouraging all its customers to save on electricity.
The advice of the electric utility came on the heels of the announcement by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) that the power generation curtailment level from the various generating companies in Mindanao reached to 450 megawatt (mW) yesterday. NGCP imposed a 93 mW curtailment on Davao Light's franchise area starting at 10:30 yesterday morning.
According to yesterday's advisory of NGCP the water level of Lake Lanao and the water in-flow in Pulangi has already been on "red alert" status. Lake Lanao and Pulangi waters run the major hydro plants in Mindanao.
Ross Luga, Davao Light Corporate Communications Officer, said that with the precarious situation of power, the electric utility feels it imperative to advise its customers to be prudent in their use of electricity. He said that conserving in the usage of energy could help reduce the demand for power from the already fast depleting source.
Luga added that while the company is committed to minimize the rotational outages to within the 30-minute duration in its franchise with the help of our 40 MW Bajada Power Plant, conserving energy may just be another option to further spare Davao City from the effects of the outages. He said that the wise use of electricity by consumers may help delay the depletion of the water in Agus and Pulangi rivers.
"We are encouraging our customers to save on electricity by using it when necessary only and by turning off and unplugging appliances when not in use", Luga said.
The daily power outages already run to as long as from six to eight hours in most parts of Mindanao. Until yesterday, Davao Light customers only have a minimum of 30-minute outages rotated in different areas in different schedules.
This rotational 30-minutes power outages are expected to continue in the coming days due to the ongoing El Nino phenomenon that is drying Mindanao and the rest of the country. (DLPC) [top]
