Regional body cites outstanding LGUs, health workers involved in nutrition program

Tacloban City (March 6) -- The National Nutrition Council Region 8, together with the Regional Nutrition Committee, is scheduled to honor on March 12, 2010, outstanding local government units and barangay workers involved in the implementation of nutrition programs.

Ms. Carina Santiago, the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, informed that the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony will be held at 9:00 o'clock in the morning of March 12, at the Asia Convention Center in Tacloban City.

The awarding of Outstanding Achievers in the Field of Nutrition will be done by Department of Health Director Edgardo M. Gonzaga, the chairman of the Regional Nutrition Committee, who will also deliver the keynote address.

The awards being contended for are the CROWN Award, Green Banner Award, Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholars Award, Outstanding Barangays and Outstanding Municipal Action Officers Award. Special citations will also be awarded.

Among this year's awardees are Honorable Mayor Maloney L. Samaco of Maasin City, Southern Leyte; Maripipi, Biliran Mayor Noel Albelda; Barangay Captain Brigida Blasabas of Acasia, Maasin City; and Ms. Cecilia M. Mira of Barangay Acasia in Maasin City as the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar.

The Green Banner Award is given to a municipality, city or province which has shown outstanding performance in implementing its nutrition program. It has several categories such as Outstanding Municipality in the Province; Outstanding Municipality in the Region; Outstanding City in the Region; and Outstanding Province in the Region.

Green Banner awardees are given the green banners which are symbolic streamers as proof of their outstanding performance in the implementation of their nutrition programs.

They have also the opportunity to receive the CROWN (Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition) Award by being Green Banner Awardees for three consecutive years.

CROWN awardees which maintain outstanding performance as determined by the National Evaluation Team for another three consecutive years will receive the Nutrition Honor Award, the highest award given by the National Nutrition Council.

The Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholars Award is also given to the community based nutrition volunteers with outstanding performance. (PIA 8) [top]
