Rural sectors curious about climate change

by Jean Duron-Abangan

Tagum City (23 March) -- About 400 members of rural-based organizations in Davao del Norte will converge at the Bulwagan ng Lalawigan here to gain more insight on global warming and climate change.

Provincial Agriculturist Dominador Encarnacion said members of farmers', fisherfolks', women's, youth's organizations and other grassroots groups will attend this Thursday's the day-long 3rd Provincial Rural-Based Organization (RBO) Day which will banner the theme, "Mobilizing Farmers, Rural Women and Youth on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation."

"The event will give us an opportune time to understand the context of climate change, and will provide us some insights on how we can contribute to create a resilient sector to address this global malady," Encarnacion said.

The RBO Day is held annually to highlight the contributions of rural-based organizations, model farmers, and other stakeholders to the development of the agriculture sector of Davao del Norte.

PAGRO Davao del Norte has invited Southern Mindanao Regional Services Division officer-in-charge Gerry S. Pedrico of the Philippine Atmospheric Geo-physical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pag-asa), to discuss climate change.

Other speakers who will talk about various mitigation measures regarding El Nino, are coming from the regional offices of the Department of Agriculture and the National Irrigation Administration.

Gawad Saka awardees who will vie at the regional and national levels, will also be recognized during the RBO day.

At its sidelight are various competitions such as extemporaneous speaking, singing poster-making, cheering, cooking, handicraft-making, organic pesticide and fertilizer formulating, among others which will be conducted to create a festive mood during the event. (PIA XI) [top]
