Davao City (23 March) -- The City is holding its local version of Run For Water, and internationally organized group that raises awareness for the global water crisis.
Dubbed as Run for Water Davao, this activity enjoins everyone to start solving the water problem today by participating in the said event on April 18 at 6 am, starting at People's Park.
It is one of the series of the 6 km run or walks happening over the course of 24 hours globally.
This activity stresses the significance of 6km as this is the average distance many women and children walk everyday to secure water.
Running or walking 6km makes the realities of water scarcity more real to those living in urban cities or developed countries.
Data showed that one in eight people don't have access to safe, clean drinking water.
"This activity is an eye-opener to everyone who still haven't felt the problem of scarce water," said Councilor Leo Avila, one of the organizers of the local water run.
He said the funds generated from the run would then go to communities where there is water conservation program like spring impoundment.
The money will also be used to establish water systems and facilities in communities where women and children need to hike 3 to 6 km just to secure potable water.
his activity is organized by the Office of Vice Mayor Sara Duterte, Office of Councilor Avila III, Davao City Water District, Kinaiyahan Foundation Inc., Watershed Management Youth Council, Youth for Environment and Peace with technical assistance by Davao Sunday Runners Club. (PIA XI) [top]
