ASEF, AIM to hold education-finance experts meeting

Manila (24 March) -- Experts from the fields of education and finance from Asia and Europe will meet at a workshop entitled, The Impact of the Financial Crisis to Higher Education. This is the first Asia-Europe Education Workshop organised by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). It will be held at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Conference Center in Makati City on 25-26 March 2010.

Initial mapping in 2009 reveals varying responses to reduced resources in government, private, and household sectors. Some countries have reduced investments in education while others have launched stimulus packages to benefit the education sector. The economic crisis has had an impact to the discussion on education funding, and on higher education in particular.

The two-day experts? meeting will shed light on the actual impact of the financial crisis on higher education across ASEM countries. It will provide a snapshot of the current situation and will aid in policy inputs in recommendations for the future.

Topics to be covered will include the effects of the crisis on institutions and governments and their responses; the impact on student and staff mobility; the return on investment of higher education; and the lessons learned from the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis.

Panellists will include experts from UNESCO, AIM, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the European University Association (EUA), Intel, and selected universities and higher education associations in Asia and Europe.

The outcome of this workshop will be presented at the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit of Heads of State and Government which will be held in Brussels, Belgium (5-6 October 2010) and at the 2nd ASEM Rectors? Conference to be held in Korea in November 2010.

This event is the first in a series of Asia-Europe Education Workshops under the ASEM Education Hub (AEH), an initiative of ASEF which aims at promoting higher-education co-operation among ASEM member-states.
