BFAR appoints fisherfolk as regional director for May

By Christy Carole Sanico

Davao City (6 May) -- Fisherfolk Camilo H. delos Trayco, 50, is now taking the lead of manning and operating the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the region, as he exchanged place with its regional director.

For the whole month of May, Delos Trayco would temporarily replace BFAR XI Regional Director George G. Campeon as a unique way of celebrating the Farmers and Fisherfolks' Month.

"BFAR is very unique because we are inviting an ordinary fisherman to become our regional fisherfolk director for the month of May," disclosed Campeon during the opening ceremony on Tuesday (May 4, 2010).

According to Campeon, Delos Trayco, who hails from Barangay Sabay, Malita, Davao del Sur was chosen from among the five fisherfolks coming from various areas of the region who vied for the position.

The fisherfolk director's itinerary for this month includes project visitations at ROS Tagabuli and Digos, Davao del Sur on May 5 to 6. He is also set to visit the Mariculture parks of Nabunturan, Pantukan, Mati, Panabo City and Samal," Campeon enumerated.

Also, Delos Trayco will visit Davao Oriental PFO office, and is required to attend a monthly meeting at Lupon and San Isodro, Davao Oriental which is set on May 27-28.

Campeon said that the appointed fisherfolk director has "all the freedom to decide and voice out opinions on matters during meetings and conferences, attend events and conduct project visitations in the region."

Campeon explained that this annual tradition aims to mold the value of responsibility to ordinary fisherfolks and "give them an opportunity to do and act like a real director."

"As for me, I'm planning to have a 'getaway' in coastal areas and live like a true-blooded fisherfolk? I want to experience their way of life even just for a month," Campeon added.

This year's celebration banners the theme: "Magsasaka at Mangingisda: Sama-samang Harapin ang Hamon ng Climate Change Gamit ang Makabagong Teknolohiya." (PIA-XI) [top]
