2 Davao del Sur mayoralty candidate supporters killed in encounter

Davao City (10 May) -- A firefight ensued between security details and supporters respectively of mayoralty candidates Givel Montejo Mamaril and incumbent Mayor Roel Paras of Malalag, Davao del Sur, resulted to the killing of two supporters of the latter about midnight yesterday in said town.

An official faxed report from Police Senior Superintendent Ronald Dela Rosa, provincial director of the Davao del Sur Police Provincial Office, bared that James Salmorin, a retired marines and Gilbert Magallanes were killed in the encounter.

Dela Rosa in his report addressed to Camp Catitipan in Davao City, revealed that another supporter of Paras, Winlab Hassan Marcos was also wounded.

He detailed that a firefight ensued at about 12 midnight of May 8, 2010, between the security details of Mamaril namely: Corporal (CPL) Eddie Aquino and Private First Class (PFC) Ireneo Lozada, both members of the 39th IB Philippine Army and the supporters of Paras at Brgy. Bulacan, Malalag.

"Initial investigation disclosed that Paras supporters on board nine motorcycles while mayoralty candidate Givel Montejo Mamaril with her two (2) army security details and supporters on board a multicab were traveling in opposite direction, when upon meeting along the road, shots were traded," Dela Rosa stated.

Recovered from the incident site, he enumerated "three (3) motorcycles, one (1) baby armalite (colt AR 15) with one (1) fully loaded 20 rounds magazine, one (1) caliber 45 norinco pistol with one (1) magazine loaded with five (5) live ammo, and one (1) homemade caliber 38 revolver with six (6) rounds live ammo.

As of May 5, 2010, an official report from the Davao del Sur Joint Security Coordinating Center (DSJSCC) on security assessment on Davao del Sur enumerated fifteen (15) election-related incidents recorded by the center since the start of the campaign period.

The recent DSJSCC report was on the shooting incident that transpired on May 4 at Brgy. Kinanga, Don Marcelino that killed the father of municipal councilor candidate Ryan Cariaga, after attending a political rally.

According to the DSJSCC report, three (3) municipalities of the province were placed under the Election Watchlist of Areas (EWAS), namely Malita, Kiblawan and Magsaysay.

Under COMELEC Resolution No. 8887 dated May 8, 2010, Davao del Sur and Davao City have been declared under COMELEC control in the Davao Region. (PIA-XI) [top]
