PIA Press Release

Troops recover bomb on election eve in Sultan Kudarat

by Cpt Emmanuel R Garcia (INF)

Camp Apolinario, Panacan, Davao City (10 May) -- Soldiers recovered an Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) planted by New People's Army (NPA) on a bridge in the village of Maligaya in Columbio town in Sultan Kudarat province 10:30 AM Sunday.

Residents said they saw armed men below Mauno Bridge which prompted them to inform soldiers of the 27th Infantry Battalion headed by Lt. Col. Joshua Santiago who immediately responded. Soldiers discovered a hastily laid IED on the side of the bridge indicating that the NPAs may have immediately left upon seeing the soldiers coming.

Santiago said they also received information regarding IEDs planted by NPAs in other parts of Columbio town. "We are currently verifying those reports to clear those places of IEDs planted by NPAs so that our people will be safe from harm." Santiago added.

Army bomb experts from the 65th Explosives and Ordnance Detachment recovered three 60mm High Explosive mortar cartridges, three 40mm High Explosive cartridges, two blasting caps and two meters of wire.

Maj. Gen. Carlos Holganza, commander of the Army's 10th Infantry Division (10ID) thanked the residents for the timely information given to soldiers as he deplored the planting of an IED by the NPA on the bridge. "Our gratitude goes to our citizens in Columbio who are the real heroes in the discovery of such huge IED. Many lives were saved and destruction of the bridge was prevented because of the timely information they have provided. This again, is a deplorable act of the CPP-NPA-NDF; it only cements their worldwide reputation as a terrorist organization," Holganza said.

This is so far the 18th IED recovered by troops of 10ID in Region 11 and Socsksargen (South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City) area this year. Last week, troops recovered an IED planted by NPA terrorists along the road in the village of Kauswagan in Lupon town in Davao Oriental Province.

In 2009, 11 IEDs were blown by NPAs in Davao region killing 10 government troops and a civilian while wounding another 28 government troops and two unarmed civilians.

Last March, a truck driver was injured when NPAs blew-up an IED in the village of Barakatan in Toril district in Davao City.

Reports from the field indicate that NPA terrorists are planting IEDs against government troops and as leverage against candidates planning to campaign in far flung areas in line with their extortion scheme "Permit to Campaign Fee." (PA) [top]
