CCL glitch stops provincial canvassing in Nueva Vizcaya

by Ben Moses Ebreo

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (May 13) -- Provincial canvassing of the 2010 automated national and local election in the province was suspended Wednesday afternoon as erroneous data was discovered among the remaining four laptops used in the transmission of election results in four municipalities here.

"These are technical problems encountered during the actual transmission of election results by the Board of Election Inspectors(BEIs) from the precinct level to the Municipal Board of Canvassers (MBOC). It is good that we learned these earlier," said Hilda Padilla, assistant provincial election officer.

The incident also prompted the Commission on Elections to issue an en banc memorandum, ordering Canvassing and Consolidation Laptops (CCLs) to be brought at the national canvassing hub for its necessary configuration before these will be sent back to their respective provinces for the continuation of the provincial canvassing.

Padilla said the technical problem came as the remaining four municipalities in the province, such as Sta. Fe, Aritao, Ambaguio and Kayapa are about to transmit their election results.

"We are already on the 80 percent stage of our transmission process when this problem came in. Nonentheless, we have to act on it," Padilla said.

According to Padilla, a similar problem also occurred in some parts of Batanes and Isabela provinces.

"We just hope that there are only few provinces who have encountered this kind of problem so that we will not have much delays," she said.

Padilla said the faulty laptops have been brought to Metro Manila early today by Smartmatic and Commission on lections personnel with volunteers of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting([PPCRV) for their necessary configuration.

She however said that so far, the automated election in the province was a very successful process despite the technical problems encountered at hand.

"Once they are operational, they can transmit the results from Metro Manila," Padilla added. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
