PGMA to meet grand national winner of DOLE Kabuhayan Award
Zamboanga City (14 May) -- Before leaving her post as the highest official of the land, President Gloria Macapagal will visit Pagadian City to meet the Springland Youth Workers Association (SYWA), the Grand National Winner of DOLE's Kabuhayan Award.
SYWA is a group of young workers from Springland Hotel and Restaurant organized in January, 2001 with 65 members. The coveted award was given last May 1 in time for the celebration of Labor Day at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia through its chairman, Edison Lozarito.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo presented the award assisted by DOLE Secretary Marianito D. Roque.
In its desire to help workers receiving minimal pay, the regional office of DOLE offered SYWA trainings on organizational management, capability building and basic entrepreneurship. It also extended livelihood assistance amounting to P200,000 for prawn, bangus and tilapia culture and crab fattening. The amount of P478,000 was also released to put up an internet café with funds coming from the Workers' Income Augmentation Program (WINAP).
Because of continued profits from their projects, SYWA opened a lending program for all its officials and members to help them augment their daily income.
DOLE Provincial Director Virginia Bonbon said because of the resounding success of the young entrepreneurs, SYWA earned the attention of PGMA. The President was very impressed with their accomplishments that she promised she would pay them a visit.
It is a great honor and pride for DOLE Region 9 under the leadership of Regional Director Ponciano Ligutom to receive the Grand National Award considering that several regions were competing for the much- coveted award.
In the same occasion, AH1N1 vaccines will be given to employees from the tourism sector, including SYWA members because they are the direct service providers to its customers.
The Department of Health-Center for Health and Development (DOH-CHD) Region 9 will spearhead the vaccination with the support of the medical staff from the Zamboanga del Sur Medical Center.
PGMA is expected to arrive tomorrow at 10:00 am, proceed to Botica Ata (Botika sa Barangay) then to Springland Hotel and Restaurant for a brief program. (PIA-RO9, Pagadian City) [top]
