3 killed, 2 wounded in Mayoyao hacking incident

by Vency D. Bulayungan

Mayoayo, Ifugao (15 May) -- Two persons were killed while two others were wounded when a person believed to have mental illness ran amok hacking people around him last May 11 in barangay Guinihon here.

Deputy Provincial Director for Operations, PSupt. Davy Vicente Limmong identified the suspect as Joseph Bandao.

Limmong said that on the night of May 10, incumbent Councilor Samuel Mangitag and company had a drinking spree at his house upon learning that he was reelected. Bandao was present in the informal gathering.

The following day at around 5:00 PM, Bandao returned with a bolo and begun hacking people in the vicinity. Bandao first met teenage sisters Lolita and Lalaine Maguiwe and killed them with his bolo. The girls' father George Maguiwe and councilor Mangitag came to their rescue but they were also attacked by Bandao.

Limmong said PSI Gregorio Marcos, the Chief of Police here and his men responded and when they saw that they cannot control the suspect, Marcos shot the foot of Bandao, who at that time was attacking Mangitag and Maguiwe.

"Basing on the scenario, Marcos was trying to control the situation before the suspect kills more people," Limmong said.

As of presstime, Mangitag and Maguiwe are in critical condition at the Ifugao General Hospital.

The remains of Bandao is lying in Barangay Guinihon here. Limmong said that the relatives of Bandao did not file any complaint as of the moment. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
