DENR mulls review of forest co-management projects

by Ben Moses Ebreo

Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya (May 31) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources(DENR) is considering a review of forest co-management agreement projects in the region to strengthen its protection and management components in Cagayan Valley region.

"I believe some of these projects in the region need to be reviewed and revisited inorder to address certain issues and concerns towards proper protection and management of our forests," said Benjamin Tumaliuan, DENR regional executive director in Cagayan Valley region.

In 2004, the DENR suspended the processing of forest co-management applications and returned the protection and management components of existing forest co-management agreements into their control.

Tumaliuan cited the numerous forest fires in several reforestation projects in Nueva Vizcaya in March this year which damaged several tree species such as the 22,000 - hectare Lower Magat Eco-Tourism Project(LMETP) in Diadi town and the 13-hectare Bangan Hill national park in barangay Magsaysay in Bayombong town.

He said the possible review of forest co-management agreement or projects in the region will also serve as a venue to identify the weaknesses and strengths of the project with local government units concerned.

"I think it is just but proper to share our role with the local governments and identify where to we have to improve and put more resources on it specially in protecting them," Tumaliuan stressed.

He said that since LGUs also earn taxes from these projects, there is a need to encourage them to put additional resources for their protection and management specially from forest fires. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
