Commentary: NPA anti-Lumad campaign reaches alarming proportions

Davao City (2 June) -- The spate of killings in Southern Mindanao perpetrated by the New People's Army (NPA) is reaching another peak. What is so alarming is that it is directed against civilians, against Lumads and in some cases against unarmed government agents killed in the most treacherous way.

Terrorists invading ancestral lands. The 18 indigenous ethno-linguistic groups in Mindanao commonly known as Lumads and whose majority lives in southern Mindanao have been for so long at the receiving end of the NPAs anti-Lumad campaign. These tribes have found life so dangerous since the NPAs started forcing them to veer away from their customs and beliefs.

Traditional leaders are being harassed and oftentimes being killed by NPAs and worse by NPA backed indigents since most traditional leaders are hindrance to communism which the NPA wants to establish.

Most of those who do not subscribe to the idea of communism were being tagged as government agents and killed wantonly. The mere presence of a soldier in one's home is suspect and while the government tries to bring development; those helping government instrumentalities to bring much needed progress through infrastructures are also being victimized by the terrorists' death squads.

Ten year plague of terror

During the late part of the 90's NPA death squads started its full swing wanton killings of Lumads in southern Mindanao. The ten year plague of terror by the NPA from 1998 to 2008 has claimed a total of 357 Lumads. Foremost of those killed was Mayor Jose Asiay Libayao of Talaingod town in Davao del Norte. Many other Lumad leaders fell prey to the meaningless massacre of Indigents perpetrated by NPA terrorists in the guise of revolutionary justice.

The year 2009 was never safe for Lumads like the previous years. The NPAs murdered a total of 83 individuals in southern Mindanao in 2009 alone. Fifty two of those murdered were plain civilians and 24 of them were Lumads to include the brutally murdered two septuagenarians Datu Intoy Baguio, 71 years old and Pablo Evero, 72 years old. Lumad leader, Datu Amora Dagsil fell fighting NPAs who are harassing their village in Paquibato District in Davao City.

We see victims being murdered in front of their families like Efren Obaton, a 32 year-old Ata-Manobo farmer who was shot dead by NPAs in front of his three children inside their house in Sitio Barobo, Barangay Dagohoy in Talaingod, Davao Del Norte.

Benito Guzo and his wife were about to sleep when NPA gunmen cut him down in front of his spouse in Magsaysay town in Compostela Valley province in August while in October last year, Silvano delas Alas of Boston, Davao Oriental was peppered with bullets inside his home.

Some were tortured before being bled to death like the Tulang brothers of Davao City who were hogtied, the elder Tulang shot on the head while his two siblings were slit in the neck like chickens and left to bleed to death.

Resurgence of NPA killing machines

This year, we see a resurgence of the killing machines of the NPAs targeting every known individual helping the people and the government (not necessarily militarily) and the Lumads are the most hit by such reckless hate.

Early this year; NPA murdered Dionesio Baslan Jr., in Tagum City. In Boston, Davao Oriental; 13 year-old Memylin Moreno was killed in a Valentines' day attack by NPAs.

Last March, NPAs murdered Felix Valiente a mine tunnel worker in the village of Calabcab in Maco, Compostela Valley province while his two brothers were abducted by the same group.

In New Corella in Davao del Norte, Cafgu member Albino Pablo a 44 year-old father of six was killed by NPA assassins in front of his wife while tending their farm. In Davao City, another off-duty Cafgu and at the same time "habal-habal" driver, Florentino Mamuag Jr., was murdered by NPAs.

Last April, another tribal leader; Datu David Cabatlao was brutally murdered by the NPA while in the month of May, two unarmed off-duty Lumad Cafgu were cruelly killed by NPA death squads. Isidro Dura was tending his farm when he was shot dead while Oligario Monday-onan was murdered in front of his wife. Both are from the predominantly Lumad community in the village of Malabog in Paquibato district in Davao City.

Ungodly, inhuman, brutal

Such gruesome crimes can only be done by a group without regard to any belief in a supreme being, a godless organization which destroys the very foundation of society whether that of urban folks' or that of Lumads'.

The NPAs have killed and violated the rights of many individuals and they did not even bother to deny it! As a matter of fact, they publicly admitted to have carried out the killings in view of what they claim as revolutionary justice. A justice system where they are the prosecutor, the judge and the executioner rolled into one! What sense of justice can you expect in such a mockery?

They have carried these murders with impunity and total disregard to the rights of the individuals they have victimized, some were killed in front of their loved ones without the benefit of a fair and impartial trial where the accused can rightfully defend himself against accusations they (NPA) fabricated. These terrorists are known to order even family members to kill their loved ones like the case of Father Balweg who was killed by his own brother; also take note of the case of Evelyn Pitao whose murder was even sanctioned by her brother Leoncio a notorious communist leader in Davao City.

Such brutality shows the unimaginable crimes and inhuman acts intentionally committed by the CPP/NPA/NDF against our people duly sanctioned by their Central Committee.

Brutality directed against our Lumad brothers, against our citizens, against our people.

Even fighting cocks are not spared by the Maoist terrorists!

"Even fighting cocks are not spared by Maoist terrorist NPA'!" This is ALLIANCE FOR NATIONALISM AND DEMOCRACY (ANAD) Partylist's reaction to published reports that Maoist terrorist took away 19 fighting cocks after raiding the cock farm of Miguel Sola in Sitio Acapulco, Barangay Mahalang, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental in the evening of May 7, 2010 (PD, Visayas Section, May 08, 2010).

"This is something that the Filipino people must be wary about because this particular turn of event carries along bleak portents in the 41-years of Maoist terrorism against government and the Filipino people," said ANAD Rep. Jun Alcover as he chided the self-proclaimed "protectors of the people" that they now have turned themselves into cunning bandits serving their own selfish motives.

ANAD does not see any reason why fighting cocks are now part of the extortion scheme employed by Maoist terrorist except that they are now feeling the pains of hunger and want after years of evading relentless pursuit operations by government security forces. "This clearly shows the human downside of Maoist terrorists who had been victims of too much abuse by their own leaders in terms of logistics and personnel support," said Rep. Alcover as he pondered on his 10-years with the underground Maoist terrorist organization in the provinces of Region 8 and 7, in the Visayas.

"The truth of the matter is that while the lowly'red warrior' wallow in hunger, mosquito bites, and the coldness of the night, their leaders savor the comforts and flow of logistical resources forcibly exacted from the masses," Rep. Alcover explained as he pointed to the situation of Jose Ma. Sison now comfortably living on self-imposed exile in Utrecht, Netherlands; the couple Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, Satur Ocampo, and Liza Maza, to name a few, while the ordinary terrorists is compelled to endure the wrath of nature and the pains of hunger and deprivation.

However, forcibly taking 19 fighting cocks is something for the revolutionary books! "These are not to be sold in the open or selective markets but necessity dictates that the cocks are destined for the cauldron to feed hunger-stricken terrorists in the mountains or in the lowlands," said Rep. Alcover.

"With this, the Filipino people should be warned against an organized group of bandits, masquerading as Maoist terrorists cum revolutionaries, that will strike, without fear, against anyone and at any opportune time," Rep. Alcover said.

ANAD slams latest NDF propaganda sly

"They're singing the same old song in a broken record." This is how the ALLIANCE FOR NATIONALISM AND DEMOCRACY (ANAD) Partylist views the recent push by a known Maoist terrorist sectoral front organization calling on President-apparent Noynoy Aquino to immediately call for the resumption of the stalled peace talks between the government and Maoist terrorist National Democratic Front, once he takes office on July 1.

In a statement, a Maoist terrorist sectoral front organization - - - the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya), through its national vice-chair Salvador France, said the resumption of the stalled talks between the administration and the NDF should be among the priorities of the incoming Aquino government (PhilStar, May 29, 2010).

"This is like a double-edged sword where government is pushed to the wall while at the same time, the Maoist terrorist front organization is setting conditions for the resumption of the talks," said ANAD Rep. Jun Alcover.

"Since time ad memoriam these barking dogs of the Maoist terrorist CPP-NPA-NDF has never shown sincerity in what they have been saying. My experience in the communist movement taught us to make a merry-go-round on issues and to put government in a very precarious and shameful situation. This is what is happening now," Rep. Alcover added.

Rep. Alcover issued this statement as he called on the government to seriously study their position considering the insincerity and dishonesty that the Maoist terrorist group has shown in their 41-years of Maoist insurgency, in the country, and the more than 30-years of on-and-off peace talks between the government and the Maoist terrorists.

"If insincerity is all they can offer to the Filipino people, as their track record would show, then there is nothing that government, to include the incoming administration of President-apparent Noynoy Aquino, could expect from the Maoist group," Rep. Alcover pointed out.

"Any peace talk with the Maoist terrorist, without any assurance of sincerity and a commitment of full compliance by the Maoist terrorist organization to any and all agreements reached by and between the government panel and the Maoist terrorist organizations, e.g. the CPP, the NPA, and all of its sub-alterns in the NDF, Salvador France's call is just another whimper and full of holes as this clearly speaks of another propaganda stunt of the Maoist terrorist organization," Rep. Alcover explained.

"We call on the government to ascertain full compliance and commitment by the Maoist terrorist group before any peace negotiation is relived. Anything short of this could be a logical reason for government to turn down and repudiate another of the propaganda sly of this violent and inhuman Maoist terrorist organization," he added.

Aboitiz encourages UN's universal education goal

Davao City (2 June) -- Two weeks before the opening of classes in public schools, AboitizPower's wholly-owned subsidiary Hedcor Sibulan, Inc. in cooperation with Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. distributed school supplies to enrollees of far-flung Tudaya Elementary School in Barangay Sibulan, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

Three hundred incoming grades 1 to 6 pupils of the said school eagerly received a pack of paper pads, notebooks, pencils, ballpens and crayons exclusively given by Hedcor Sibulan, Inc. and Aboitiz Foundation, Inc.

"Low enrollment rate and dropping out of class due to lack of funds to send the students to school are our usual problems here", said Tudaya Elementary School Principal Ricky Amaro. "With these support in kind, I am sure the students are encouraged to go to school knowing they are equipped with the basic necessities to attend classes", added Amaro.

In January this year, United Nations (UN) warned the Philippines in leaving the poor behind when it comes to their education. Achieving universal primary education which includes expanding early childhood care and education, and providing free and compulsory primary education for all is UN's Millennium Development Goal # 2.

Tudaya Elementary School is one of the host schools to the 42.5 MW Sibulan Hydropwoer Project owned by HSI. Known as a neighbor of choice by communities, HSI and Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. give back to host communities through funds, donations and grants which focuses on primary health, education, livelihood and environmental sustainability.
