34th Subiran Regatta in Region 8 sets off
Tacloban City (June 28) -- Sailboats with beautiful regattas or sails from all over Eastern Visayas will gather at the Family Park fronting Cancabato Bay today for the 34th Subiran Regatta in Region 8.
This activity which is part of the annual Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival, never fails to enthrall water sports enthusiasts and tourist spectators alike.
A boast to the Region's tourism attraction, Subiran Regatta is an indigenous water sports among the Eastern Visayan fisherfolks who usually uses the Subiran, a native outrigger to indulge in their fishing activities for their livelihood.
At this time when Climate Change is a worldwide issue, the Subiran Regatta also seeks to promote the use of sails again in order to lessen the pollution of the environment.
The competition will give the general public an opportunity to watch the fishermen exhibit their mastery and skills in maneuvering their attractive and colorful subiran craft, sailing and steering them in an 8 nautical miles race, along Cancabato Bay starting and ending at the Family Park.
Mayor Roque Tiu, the chairman of the Subiran Regatta Committee said that regatta enthusiasts have already officially registered to join the competition as they stand not only to win but to help promote the Region's attraction.
Cash prizes and trophies await the lucky participants. Those who are not as lucky, as usual, will not go home empty handed as the organizers always see to it that they are given consolation cash prizes, more than their daily income if they sailed out fishing.
As in the past Subiran Regattas, the Philippine Coast Guards and the Philippine Navy will assist in the management of the competition.
Mayor Tiu said that the judges are all experts of Subiran Regatta - Col. Eustaquio Nicolas, Mr. Fritz Munoz, and Mr. Isagani Granali. (PIA 8) [top]
