PIA Press Release

Region 8 observes 32nd Nat'l Disability Prevention Week

Tacloban City (July 12) -- Region 8 joins the entire country as it celebrates the 32nd National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week on July 17 to 23.

The activities which will be undertaken in Region 8 will center on this year's theme: "Istrakturang Accessible, Lahat ay Able."

As gathered from the website of the Department of Social Welfare and Development in the Region, this year's activities will start with information and advocacy programs through press conferences and radio interviews on July 17.

On July 19, a Holy Mass for the People with Disabilities will be celebrated at the Santo Nino Church at 7:00 o'clock in the morning. After the mass, a motorcade around the major roads of Tacloban City will be conducted.

At 1:30 to 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon, an orientation on programs for persons with disabilities; Republic Act 9442; Batas Pambansa Bilang 344, Autism, will be conducted.

On July 20 and 21, an RCDA Capability Building for People with Disabilities Focal Person will be conducted at the DPWH Regional Office.

On July 22 to 23, the Singing PWDs will tour several bars and restaurants while on the same day, a sports and singing competition for persons with disabilities will be conducted in Maasin City.

This year's theme was aptly chosen and adopted by the members of the National Working Committee chaired by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). This is to align it with the mandate of DPWH in the implementation and promotion of the accessibility programs of persons with disabilities for a barrier-free environment, pursuant to Batas Pambansa 344 otherwise known as the Accessibility Law.

The National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation week seeks to highlight the nation's efforts towards disability prevention and rehabilitation leading to the effective integration of persons with disabilities into mainstream of society, as mandated under RA 727 otherwise known as the "Magna Carta for People with Disabilities.

Proclamation No. 1870 was issued on June 22, 1979 declaring the third week of July as the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week.

Subsequently Proclamation No.361 was issued on August 19, 2000 resetting the dates of the annual observance of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week which culminates on the birthdate of the sublime paralytic, Apolinario Mabini, on July 23 each year.

The celebration of the NDPR week aims to stimulate public awareness on all matters and issues involving persons with disabilities.

It also aims to encourage every citizen to take active responsibility in uplifting their economic and social conditions as well as recognizing the abilities of our brethren with disabilities; and to encourage the PWD sector in taking pro-active roles in nation building. (PIA 8) [top]
