DOH spearheads "Walk and Bike for a Cause 2010"
Davao City (21 July) -- In line with the celebration of "World Thalassemia Day", the Department of Health (DOH), headed by Assistant Secretary Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial, spearheaded the "Walk and Bike for a Cause 2010" on June 26, 2010 which started at 5:30 am from the Robinsons Cybergate Davao to People's Park.
The cause-oriented event was for the benefit of Dr. Gerry Cunanan Mindanao Heart Fund, Incorporated (DGCMHFI), Mindanao Thalassemia Foundation, Incorporated and SCOOP-DAVAO.
Thalassemia (also spelled thalassaemia) is an inherited autosomal recessive blood disease. In thalassemia, the genetic defect results in reduced rate of synthesis of one of the globin chains that make up hemoglobin. Reduced synthesis of one of the globin chains can cause the formation of abnormal hemoglobin molecules, thus causing anemia, the characteristic presenting symptom of the thalassemias.
The objective of the event is to increase public awareness about healthy lifestyle and advocate Thalassemia prevention and support group.
A short program was held at the People's Park. The said activity was participated in by the different sectors of society. (PIA) [top]
