Roxas City pledges support to civic group

by Jemin B. Guillermo

Roxas City (6 August) -- The Roxas City Plaza Chess Association has gained the support of City Mayor Angel Alan Celino.

During the recent association's induction ceremony, Celino pledged to support the activities of said civic organization by helping in the putting up of a chess center here.

According to Board of Director Benny Cortes, the city mayor vowed to also launch an inter-barangay chess tournament whose winners will vie for the championship finals during the Sinadya sa Halaran festival in December.

Celino, he said, stressed that the Roxas City Plaza Chess Association, Inc. is his first recognized civic organization after assuming office as city mayor last June 30.

The city mayor also urged the association to apply for accreditation as a non-government organization in the Sangguniang Panlungsod in order to take active participation in local programs and activities, Cortes stressed.

Installed into office by Celino are the association's newly elected officers led by Manuel Cambe as president, Ben Billones as vice president, Donato Arce as secretary, Fajardo Olandres as treasurer, Junmar Natanuan as auditor, Aladin Ignacio and Ramelo Villanueva as business managers, Nicolas Basa as press relations officer, and Noel Clarito and Romeo Capunong as peace and order officers.

The board of directors who were sworn into office includes Edito Saludaga as chairman with Jose Albaladejo, Ariel Andrada, Engr. Neil Panelo, Ildefonso Borreros, Vicente Corros, Walden Ruefa and Rommel Arellano as members.

Aside from Cortes, the other board of advisers includes City Councilors Erwin Sicad and Matthew James Viterbo, and Jessie Dalisay, John Mejorada, Jose Aldea and Engr. Midelo Ocampo.

The Department of Education coordinators are Ronilo Tu and Pio Bengan, Jr.

On the other hand, Cambe expressed gratitude to the city's local officials for supporting the association in its efforts to be a partner in development programs, particularly on sports.

The RCPCA is a registered organization with the Securities and Exchange Commission and had been participating in various local, regional and national chess competitions for many years now. (PIA) [top]
