Martial arts festival slated at Campo Agua August 7-8
Davao City (6 August) -- Three kinds of martial art tournaments will be featured this weekend at the Campo Agua Beach Resort in Sirawan, Toril as a pre-Kadayawan Festival celebration.
"The entrance is free for the public to watch the fights," organizer Rommel Tan, branch manager of the Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao Chapter said last Tuesday at the weekly SCOOP Forum of the Royal Mandaya Hotel.
It will start this Saturday, Aug. 7 with a Judo tournament in the morning followed by the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition in the afternoon. Both events are handled and organized by former Philippine judo national player Paolo Tancontian.
"We want to discover and develop new and young judokas as well as to promote the Brazilian Jiu jitsu also," said Tancontian, who teaches both sport at the Holiday Gym and Spa.
Aside from the medals, the winners will also get a chance to earn another rank higher from their present belt.
"This is also a promotional test for them because we will be mixing them with higher belts," Tancontian said.
The judo and BJJ events are sponsored by Coca-Cola Bottlers, Starex Auto Parts, Mr. and Mrs. Jojo Acla, Atty. R. Malaki, AAK Davao, 105.9 Mix FM, Michael Dakudao, Silverwater Phils. and Campo Agua Resort.
Tancontian said that he wants to form a Davao City judo team that will soon play in the national and international tournaments this year.
"We need to expose our players more to be able to produce for the national team," said Tancontian, whose father Antonio and uncles Romy and Bimbo are also recognized elder judo masters and members of the promotion council in the Philippines.
On Sunday, Aug. 8, the AAK Inter-School Karatedo tournament will be held featuring the young and promising players from different schools of Davao and Bukidnon.
"We will just limit it to 100 players in order to be able to finish it," said AAK Davao Branch manager Rommel Tan.
Tan said that the event will also serve as a tune-up for the Davao City team that will compete in the Karatedo Goju-Kai Singapore 30th Anniversary Asia-Pacific Open Championships on Sept. 11 in Singapore.
Supporting the AAK Davao team are TKS Petron, Engr. Mike Te and Esther Te, Zimmons Industries, Engr. Noel Bacalla, Beefit Gym, Archt. Benjamin Lim and Campo Agua.
Campo Agua will also provide a bus for the public on Aug. 7 at 8 a.m. at the Holiday Gym and Spa located along Torres St. It will return to the city after the event. The bus will again be available for the karate event on Sunday at 8 a.m. at the Elle's Pension along Mt. Apo St. near Davao Doctor's Hospital. (PIA) [top]
