Davao City (16 September) -- In his first visit in Mindanao today, President Benigno Aquino III will have a head start at Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur to lead the inauguration of the P6 billion Sibulan hydro plant.
The President has been invited to grace the inauguration of the run-of-river environment-friendly 42.5 megawatts hydroelectric power plant, developed by Hedcor Sibulan, Inc. at Barangay Darong, Sta. Cruz.
P-Noy would do the ceremonial switching-on of the hydro plant signifying completion and full operation.
Hedcor Inc. president Rene Ronquillo said the completion of the Sibulan hydro project "is timely because it will help mitigate the power shortage in Mindanao."
He said the hydro plant is now serving customers of Davao's power utility firm, the Davao Light and Power Company.
After the inauguration ceremony, the Aboitiz Power Corp. family would pay tribute to Ernesto Aboitiz, Hedcor founding president and former National Power Corp. (Napocor) president.
Ronquillo said the existence of the hydro plant "would not have been possible without Ernesto Aboitiz's vision and dedication."
Hedcor Sibulan Inc., a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Power Corp., implemented the hydropower project with two cascading run-of-river hydropower plants that utilize the Sibulan and Baroring Rivers in Santa Cruz, Davao Del Sur. It has an estimated generation of 212GWh clean and renewable energy annually.
The first hydro plant which started operations in March this year is generating 26 megawatts. The second hydro plant generates an additional 16.5 megawatts.
From Davao del Sur, P-Noy would proceed to Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte for a visit and consultation-dialogue with the 3,000 beneficiaries of the KALAHI-CIDSS, 4Ps and SEA-K programs of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Later today, the President would also meet with the business leaders in Davao Region at Marco Polo Hotel in the city. (PIA-XI) [top]
