4Ps: An answered prayer
by Sheryll Jane Sanico
Sto. Tomas, Davao Del Norte (23 September) -- "In every cloud, there is a silver lining." Carolina Apas, a 38-year old 4Ps beneficiary is a living proof of this saying.
She resides in Dagohoy, Talaingod and is a member of the Dibabawon Tribe. Looking back, she recalled the hardships she suffered from the bitter pangs of poverty. With eight of them in the family, life was never easy. All her life, their family depended on planting corn for survival.
In her 36 years of existence, Carolina never once experienced how it is like to go to school or avail medical services from the health center of their municipality. She had to trail the 10-kilometer road just to reach their school campus.
Yet, despite those life's trials, Carolina chose to remain strong and firm for her family.
"Lisud kaayo among kinabuhi apan wala ko nagdahum nga muabot ang panahon nga makalingkawas kami sa kangitngit og kalisud. Gitubag sa 4Ps ang among pag-ampo (Life has been very difficult. We never imagined the day when we can break free from proverty. 4Ps is an answered prayer)," Carolina expressed.
4Ps helped three of her four children go to school. Carolina also proudly shares all her children visit their local health center regularly. As a mother and a housewife, she religiously attends the monthly Family Development Session of 4Ps.
The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) is a poverty-alleviation strategy of the national government that provides "conditional cash assistance" to extremely poor households to help improve the health, nutrition and education especially of children 0 to 14 years old.
