Davao to establish food exchange complex in 3 years

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (23 September) -- The City government of Davao is seeing an established Davao Food Exchange Complex three years from now. This is identified as one of the priority projects for the next three years.

Presented during the Regional Economic Managers' Briefing at Marco Polo Davao last week, the said complex was identified by the Regional Development Council XI as a needed infrastructure in the region.

The city will lead in transforming the NDC-owned 25-hectare area in Daliao, Toril into an economic zone where appropriate facilities specifically for food-based industries will be set up.

Davao LGU, on its part, has prepared the area for development by providing an off-site infrastructure like access to utilities and farm to market roads.

Part of the commitment of the LGU is the improvement and expansion of off-site infrastructure requirements. It will also spearhead in the social preparation activities like the relocation of informal settlers.

Currently, possible developers, locators, and support services providers are slowly shaping up. Identified locators are those having projects in poultry, fruit processing, agri processing, and cold storage facilities.

The Department of Agriculture is also identified to provide logistics for the "Bagsakan" area.

Stakeholders see the need for this project as the region needs more opportunities for the expansion of agri-based businesses by providing value-adding services to the public.

This way, it is seen that there will be a significant reduction of the costs in doing business and improvement of the region's logistics capabilities. (PIA-XI) [top]
