Davao City (10 November) -- Mindanao's potential as a food basket will be featured in next year's staging of the 8th International Food Exhibition (IFEX) Philippines in Manila.
Addressing the recently held 6th Mindanao Media Summit, Secretary Luwalhati Antonino of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) said MinDA had partnered with the Center for International Trade Exhibitions and Missions (CITEM) and IFEX Philippines to highlight Mindanao's strength in food production.
Bearing the theme: "Mindanao: Best of the Island Food Show", the event is seen to recognize Mindanao's contribution "to the country's export earnings and its enormous potentials and opportunities for expanding its share in global food trade," Antonino said.
Antonino revealed the involvement of MinDA as part of the organizing committee of the event saying, it will put together the participation of Mindanao and other member regions of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) as exhibitors and buyers.
She envisioned the staging of Mindanao in IFEX next year to create new markets for food suppliers in Mindanao as well as create jobs for Mindanawons.
In a press release published in October by a daily based in Davao City, MinDA revealed a food basket concept for the BIMP-EAGA being prepared as the sub-region positions to become a major source of food of countries in East Asia.
The PR cited the recently held meeting of the 15th BIMP-Eaga Senior Officials and Ministers Meeting in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia during which signing ministers of member countries agreed to work out ways for BIMP-EAGA to become a food basket and a premier eco-tourism destination in Asia.
Mindanao stretches in 135,626 square kilometer land area with 21.6 million population based in 2007 census.
Mindanao is noted to have extended dry seasons, have enough water supply and less frequented by typhoons unlike Luzon and Visayas. (PIA XI) [top]
