Cayetano lauds PNoy for acting on travel advisories
Manila (20 November) -- Senate minority leader Alan Peter Cayetano lauded President Benigno C. Aquino III for airing an appeal to US president Barack Obama and other leaders of foreign governments to be more circumspect when issuing travel advisory against their allies like the Philippines.
Sen. Cayetano said President Aquino's move to raise the travel advisory to US President Barack Obama at the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Summit held last week in Yokohama, Japan "was a courageous and dignified act" that seeks to protect the interests of his country and people.
The senator said that while there are critics who say that President Aquino's move was unprecedented, it being "unpresidential" since such issues are concerns for the country's ambassadors, he said the President was right to grab the opportunity to personally air the country's appeal to foreign leaders at this particular time when the government is forging ahead with reforms to attract more foreign investments and boost tourism.
"The Philippines has long been the whipping dog in the global war against terrorism as many Western countries despite our collaborative efforts to combat terrorism and keep peace and order in the country, it's time we stood up to protect our interests," said Cayetano.
Sen. Cayetano said unwarranted travel warnings impact heavily on the lives of Filipinos since these mean loss of possible jobs and revenues expected from foreign investments and tourism receipts owing to the unabated travel advisories against in the country.
He urged the country's ambassadors to be more pro-active in protecting the image of the Philippines.
Cayetano also urged Malacanang to reach out to Filipino Icons like Boxing Champion and Legend Manny Pacquiao to serves as ambassadors at large or ambassadors of goodwill of the Country around the world.
With the propensity to emphasize the negatives, may it be news items, comments on social networks or travel advisories, Icons like Manny Pacquiao will go a long way in showing the Beauty, Talent and Positives of The Philippines.
"Promoting the Country for tourism or as an investment site is a priority and we should be creative and use our best assets" Cayetano said. (Office Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano) [top]
