BIR eyes one-stop shop in Davao City

Davao City (27 November) -- The Bureau of Internal Revenue is eyeing a one-stop shop in conjunction with the City Treasurer's Office and the business bureau of the Davao City local government to facilitate convenience among taxpaying clients and to promote tax awareness.

Noel Gonzales, Revenue District Officer of RDO West Davao said that they will be talking with the representatives of the business bureau and the city treasurers to map out a one-stop shop.

The BIR is planning to set-up the shop by January next year.

Gonzales said that he have observed that many business applicants have not been paying the P500 business registration fee, thinking that after having paid their dues at the business bureau there is a misconception that there is no more fees to be paid.

The one-stop shop which will be located in City Hall will accept business registration fees and also income tax returns of those renewing their businesses licenses.

The revenue district officer said the one-stop shop can also address the low tax awareness among the public particularly those going into businesses.

Gonzales said there had been scant cooperation before with the business bureau and the city treasurers as their partners previously perceive the BIR as competitors in the collection of taxes.

"I explained to them that whatever the BIR will collect will redound to the city in the form of Internal Revenue Allotments.

Also in the plans apart from the one-stop shop is the intensification of a tax awareness campaign to induce more voluntary tax payments.

"The taxpayers have the capacity to pay but they have little willingness to pay taxes." Gonzales said.

Improving tax awareness and facilitating convenience in the payment of taxes will gradually help the BIR in achieving its revenue targets. Gonzales said. (BIR) [top]
