Trade missions put CDO in world map, says OroChamber

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (31 October) -- Pres. Arroyo is engaged in wide ranging economic and security diplomacy, combining strategic alliances with the East and the West for a secure Philippines and a safer world.

"Thus, her trips abroad, the latest of which is in China, continue to bring economic gains for the country," Ruben Vegafria, President of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (OroChamber), said.

In the case of OroChamber, however, putting Cagayan de Oro City or the whole of Northern Mindanao in the world map, has been one of its greatest achievements from joining the trade missions of the city government.

During their 3rd quarter meeting held at Pryce Plaza Hotel, recently, Vegafria said these trips which were funded from their own pockets, gave them the opportunity to answer queries from their counterparts abroad about the varied potentials of the city not only in business and tourism but also on the peace situations of the area.

"At least we were able to tell our partners that CDO and NorMin are about the most peaceful areas in Mindanao in contrast to some travel advisories that collectively report negative developments in the island." he said

Meanwhile, Engr. Elpidio Paras, Vice Pres. for Chamber Relations said a lot of positive developments have taken place in the last three years that OroChamber has been joining the trade missions led by the city government.

The group went to China, twice, to Korea, thrice, to Taiwan, once and lately to Australia and New Zealand.

One of the developments from their Korea trip, Paras said, was the fulfillment of the region's dream to have an international airport.

"Thanks to City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano and several members of the OroChamber, the Korean Exim Bank and the finance people in Korea, we were able to facilitate the interest of the Korean government in supporting the construction of the Laguindingan International Airport Development Project now ongoing in Misamis Oriental," Paras said.

He said their China trip also resulted in a lot of interesting linkages between OroChamber and the allied Chambers of Commerce who were with them in the trip. "We were able to bring Chinese visitors over because of these trips. In fact, last month we succeeded to bring in their cultural group for a gala presentation to showcase their rich culture that was appreciated by the city residents," Paras also said. (PIA 10) [top]
