Koronadal City (10 October) -- Eight hundred eighty-seven board feet of illegal logs were confiscated recently by the Provincial Environment & Natural Resources Office (PENRO) at Sitio Motukling, Brgy. Mongokayo, T'boli.
The confiscated logs belong to the "tuai" specie, and estimated more or less around P13,000.00, plus its hauling cost at P2,192.50.
T'boli Municipal Environment & Natural Resources Officer Julian Asion together with Forest Rangers Rodrigo Agreda and Dominador Cagurol, led the inspection and found the abandoned logs on the site.
Brgy. Captain Generoso Balawan believed that unidentified residents of the said barangay cut and transported the said logs to prospective buyers.
PENRO Ramon Ponce de Leon sent PENRO-South Cotabato personnel Nonito Pascual to facilitate the turnover of the confiscated logs to the South Cotabato Provincial Jail for safekeeping.
The PENRO has classified T'boli as one of the "hotspot" areas in the province due to massive "kaingin" (slash & burn logging) and another illegal logging activities.
Likewise, the DENR-MGB and AVLADA classified T'boli as one of the flood-prone areas in the province.
This is the first time that illegal logs were confiscated by PENRO-South Cotabato under its area of jurisdiction, since its creation last March 2007. (With reports from Antonio D. Solis, Photograper). (PIA 12) [top]
