Lanao del Norte marks 49th anniversary

Tubod, Lanao del Norte (9 July) -- All roads led to the agricultural town of Tubod for the7-day celebration of Lanao del Norte's 49th charter day.

The festivity was opened with the Tabo-an/Padian Day where products from the different municipalities in the province under the One Town One Product (OTOP) program of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) were displayed in the town's agora grounds.

Among the highlights of environment day held last June 28 were the tree planting activity by provincial government officials and employees at Mount Torongtorong and the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between the provincial government of Lanao del Norte and the DENR regional office.

"The joint management of the timberlands of Lanao del Norte with DENR and the provincial government will ensure that there will be no more illegal cutting of trees in the province," declared Governor Khalid Dimaporo. Candidates for the Ms. Lanao del Norte pageant were also present during the affair donning their "jungle" costume for presentation to the media.

To provide job opportunities and a new means of livelihood, the largest mariculture zone in northern Mindanao with an area of 1,372 hectares was launched by Gov. Dimaporo at Sultan Naga Dimaporo.

The ceremonial stocking of 20,000 bangus fingerlings that would produce 10 tons of bangus every 3 month was witnessed by Lanao del Norte Vice-Governor Irma Umpa Ali, BFAR Regional Director David Ernacio, Provincial Board Member Casimiro Bagol, and SND Municipal Mayor Motalib Dimaporo.

On the morning of that same day, the Teacher's Day program was held at the Mindanao Civic Center (MCC) gymnasium. "We can only ensure the future of the province by investing in the children of Lanao del Norte", disclosed Governor Dimaporo. Both the public school teachers and students were in full force as the governor outlined his plans for the active role the education sector will take in the upcoming sporting activities at MCC.

The tourism day celebration on the fifth day showcased the colorful and rich cultural heritage of the province as contingents from 11 municipalities compete in the Showdown of Festivals where the municipality of Tubod with their Sagingan Festival came out on top.

Another crowd drawer was the Sagayan Festival with the contingent from the municipality of Salvador being declared as this year's best group.

Capturing the theme "culture of peace," entries for the painting and photography competition were also exhibited at the media center in MCC. To cap off the tourism day festivities, 17 beautiful ladies from all municipalities of the province vied for the title of Miss Lanao del Norte. Tubod representative Elyza Jade Dalongenes was crowned the winner by the judges.

The "People's Day" which was organized by the provincial government of Lanao del Norte was its way of bringing the government closer to the people. Services from National Line Agencies (NGA) were brought to MCC gymnasium. Simultaneously, medical and dental missions were also on-site to give access to the needy residents of the province to quality health care services.

On the evening of "People's Day," the popular band "Parokya ni Edgar" entertained constituents and guests of the province. After the jam-packed concert, people were treated to a breath-taking fireworks display that captivated the mammoth crowd at MCC and the residents of nearby barangays.

On the 4th of July, barangay, municipal and provincial officials marched towards the grandstand of the Mindanao Civic Center to show solidarity and support to the leadership of Governor Khalid Dimaporo. To advance agricultural productivity and economic conditions of Lanao del Norte, guest speaker Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri identified the Municipality of Linamon as the site for a Jatropha nursery here in northern Mindanao.

"Just three kilos of jatropha seeds will already produce a liter of bio-diesel and it will also raise the income of our marginalized farmers", revealed the senator from Bukidnon.

Speaking before the government employees and the media, the senator was pleased to announce that in partnership with provincial governor Khalid Quidranza Dimaporo, 500 hectares of prime agricultural land in Linamon have already been tagged as Jatropha Nursery.
