Region XII agencies remain functional despite armed conflicts

by Norhana Kabagani, Al-Nur Mampen

Cotabato City (8 October) -- "Buhay na buhay ang Rehiyon Dose" (Region XII is very alive). This was the consensus of the representatives of government agencies during the press conference of the Regional Information Command Center held this morning at POPCOM XII Office Cotabato City which is broadcasted live via Radyo ng Bayan.

The said conference aims to inform and educate the public and wrong their misconceptions that Region XII and ARMM are passive due to prevailing media reports that these two regions are very affected by the armed conflict happening on this part of the country.

Different government agencies came into this conference and answered the questions asked by the media who are also present in this event. Each agency explained their functions and the programs they are doing during this time of armed conflict in these regions.

The Department of Agriculture XII represented by its RAFID Chief Nelly Ylanan stressed the FIELDS program of the government which is believed to be very helpful to the growth of agricultural production in this region despite the said conflict. FIELDS as spelled-out by Ylanan stands for Fertilizers, Irrigations, Education and Trainings, Loans, Dryers and Seeds.

The National Economic Development Authority represented by its Knowledge and Management Division Chief May Esther T. Guiamadel disclosed that NEDA is the highest planning agency that monitors on the implementation of the government projects in the region. Guiamadel also said that they are now focused on the priority thrusts of Region XII, looking into the potentials of the region and how to harness it to its fullest. The NEDA is likewise focused on the poverty reduction projects, monitoring effective governance which accordingly can be achieved by getting participation from the people.

On the other hand, the Office on Muslim Affairs XII represented by its Development Management Officer Munib Mangelen likewise presented the programs they are doing as one functional agency of the government. He enumerated their different services offered such as issuance of tribal certificates, providing legal assistance, monitoring of halal foods, sponsoring Qur'an reading competition and providing assistance for pilgrimage. Mangelen also added that their programs are not only for the Muslims but they are also helping non-Muslims.

This press conference served as venue for these concern agencies to prove to the public that they are performing as government institutions. During the conference, they requested the media to help them inform and educate the public of their programs and projects they are implementing since they believe the media is a powerful medium for information dissemination.
