DTI Ifugao destroys confiscated uncertified steel bars

by Vency D. Bulayungan

Lagawe, Ifugao (10 October) -- To protect consumers here from buying uncertified construction materials, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recently destroyed confiscated steel bars here.

Witnessed by national, local employees and elected officials, the ceremonial destruction is in line with the launching of the celebration of the Consumer Month this October.

DTI Provincial Director Valentin Baguidudol informed that his office in cooperation with DTI Central and Regional Offices confiscated 2,600 uncertified steel bars in a hardware outlet here.

He also said that 69 unqualified Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) were confiscated in different key stores here and the adjoining municipalities of Kiangan and Lamut but were returned to the concerned stores with the instruction having the said tanks be qualified. We do not have qualifiers here in the province that is why we let the owners be the one to let it be qualified before selling it.

These actions are an indication that the government is serious in implementing the law and we will continue implementing it for the sake of our consumers, he added.

According to Baguidudol, the unqualified LPGs are the causes of accidents in households. We hope that this will serve as a lesson to owners of business establishments to also consider the safety of their consumers, he further said.

Baguidudol said that DTI has a series of activities to be conducted in celebration of the consumer month as follows: Quizbee and poster making contest to be participated by school children of the elementary and secondary level; Information and Education Campaign in schools; seminar on Product Standard wherein the participants are owners of hardware, LPGs and engineers of local government units, complaint handling with consumers and enforcement agencies such as Bureau of food and Drugs, Department of Agriculture, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, National Food Authority among others as audience.

With the theme "Leading the consumers toward efficient lighting for better future," Baguidudol said that the DTI aims to strengthen linkage among concerned agencies in handling complaints to equip them with legal background especially alternative dispute resolution. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
