LGU bent on more peaceful and orderly Zamboanga
Zamboanga City (Jan. 13) -– With the stigma of terrorism slowly fading in this region, the city government, in cooperation with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Southern Command, has taken another step in improving the peace and order condition of this city by permitting Barangay Tanods to carry firearms during patrol in their respective barangays.
This decision is to ensure the safety of the people and the tanods as well to any danger brought about by lawless elements who spread sinister acts that threaten the residents in the city.
In a meeting with the Barangay officials, Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat said the police and military have already allowed the carrying of firearms by tanod as long as they are rendering official duties within their Barangay.
Wih this responsibility, tanods are expected to strictly comply with the four specific guidelines. First, their firearms should be duly licensed or registered. Second, they must wear the prescribed uniform. Third is they must be covered by detailed patrol order signed by the Barangay chairman and lastly, they must only operate within their own Barangay.
Lobregat stressed that the guidelines are also embodied in the implementing guidelines of the Firearms and Explosives Ban signed by the city government, police and the military.
The mayor also said that Barangay tanod must also be responsible in carrying his firearm and must always coordinate with the Barangay officials.
With this initiatives of the city authorities, terrorists and other lawless elements would have to doubt if they still should pursue their barbaric and sadistic activities in the city. (Z.C. Infocenter) [top]
