Mining forum slated in Cebu

by Roberto M. Cabardo

Cebu City (22 August) -- The Office of the President through the Office of Sec. Delia Albert, Presidential Envoy for Mining, will hold a two-day forum on mining, August 24-25, at the Cebu Business Hotel, Colon St., Cebu City.

On the first day (9:00 am-6:00 pm, August 24-Wednesday), the organizers hope to identify the communication problems relative to mining and the information gaps among government agencies and the private sector through a Communications Planning Workshop on the Mineral Action Plan.

Other than the workshop, a Multi-Sectoral Stakeholders Forum on Responsible Mining for the Visayas Regions will unfold on the second day (9:00 am-5:00 pm, August 25, 2005-Thursday) in the same venue. The forum is the second of three scheduled consultation meetings held in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Last year, Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through Memorandum Circular No. 67 (series of 2004) directed all government agencies to assist in the implementation of Executive Order No. 270 (s. 2004) otherwise known as the National Policy Agenda for Revitalizing Mining in the Philippines.

The government believes that by revitalizing the mining industry, the country will be able to increase revenues and generate much-needed employment of many Filipinos.

Those who are attending the two-day affair are representatives from the non-government organizations (NGOs), government, and the private sector. (PIA-7) [top]
