PIA Press Release

Maasin extends financial assistance to new GK village

By Bong Pedalino

MAASIN CITY (5 December) -- The city government here has released the amount of P 100,000.00 for the site development of the new Gawad Kalinga (GK) area, the Josefina Zialcita II GK village, located in the mountainous portion of barangay Combado, this city.

In Resolution Number 526, the City Council headed by Vice-Mayor Maloney Samaco, during its regular session on October 25, authorized and approved the release of the money which was taken from "Aid to Various Entities" account of the city.

"The City government had a joint commitment with the GK in rebuilding the lives of the poorest of the poor in our locality and had already made the launching of the said project," the Sangguniang Panlunsod resolution said.

On September 24, the formal launching of the one-hectare mass housing site was held at the Parish Convent Function Hall in the city attended by the Lot Donors, Gov. Rosette Lerias, and Cong. Roger Mercado, who also signed the quitclaim document as witnesses.

Also in attendance were several heads of government agencies who work closely as partners with the GK, 8th Infantry Division Army Commander Major Gen. Bonifacio Ramos, and the city government represented by City Councilor Ma. Essie Espina Garvez.

Councilor Garvez was the one who sponsored and moved for the resolution that channeled the release of P 100,000.00 as financial assistance for the site development of the Zialcita GK village, seconded by Effie Abiera Sabandal.

Dr. Jerome Paler, GK Provincial Head, confirmed the release of the money and its initial use for earth-moving action at the site proper.

In a related development, the Sangguniang Barangay of Combado approved Resolution Number 21 s-2005 in its regular session on November 8 "adopting the GK program."

There was no specific action indicated in the resolution signed by Punong Barangay Lowelito Casepe, but the barangay's move can be interpreted, aside from an expression of support, as having no objection to the Couple's for Christ (CFC) initiative.

The barangay resolution was moved by Kagawad Lucillin Conato and seconded by Kagawad Avelino Romero. (PIA-Southern Leyte) [top]
