Philippine Travel Exchange showcases travel destinations in Region 8

By Marivic A. Alcober

Tacloban City (4 October) - The Department of Tourism (DOT), Central Office in coordination with the Philippine Convention & Visitors Corporation and some private travel entities as partners, spearheaded in the organization of the recently concluded 6th Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila last September 8-9, 2006.

In an interview with DOT-8 Regional Director Karina Rosa S. Tiopez, it was bared that the travel trade event, which is comprised of business to business sessions provide an exclusive opportunity for the Philippine travel suppliers to meet, network, negotiate and conduct business with foreign travel trade buyers.

Aside from the business component, Tiopes added, the event was an opportunity for the buyers to experience first hand the destinations, especially Leyte when said buyers get the opportunity to visit. Further, it widens market base and increase tourist arrivals to region 8.

During the Travel Exchange, Tiopes revealed that more than 150 buyers attended and said buyers represented Australia, Hong Kong, India, Korea, China, Russia, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Europe was represented buyers coming from Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and Poland, while buyers from North America came from Canada and the United States.

Tiopes shared that the sellers in said event included airlines, shipping companies, hotels and resorts, car rental companies, entertainment establishments, convention and exhibition organizers, and local tour operators.

On their part, DOT-8 gave their support through endorsement of Family Tours and provided promotional collaterals that included DVDs and Eastern Visayas brochures showcasing travel destinations in the region. On the other hand, there was an aggressive selling by the Local Tour Operators represented by delegates Ludette Ruiz and Hely Asoy at the 17th Philippine Travel Mart, which was also held last September 8-9 at the Mega Trade Hall, SM Megall, Mandaluyong City, and the one-on-one appointments at the PHITEX, plus the conduct of the Post Tour to Leyte.

As a result of the Travel Exchange, Region 8 representatives observed that very few of the Foreign Tour Operators were aware of the so many beautiful possible tourist destinations in the region. Relative to this, the Local Tour Operators in the region in coordination with DOT-8 plans to continue feeding both local and international tour operators with brochures and packages, and likewise, request DOT Central Office to include region 8 in their promotions of Philippine destinations both here and abroad.
