PIA Press Release

Leyeco II boasts cheapest electricity in Region 8

Tacloban City (October 8) -– Contrary to the general notion that the power rates in the Region are among the highest in the country, the power rates in the Region are among the cheapest, with Leyte II Electric Cooperative (LEYECO II) posting the lowest power rate in the Region and in the Visayas.

This was disclosed by Ms. Vangie Paran of the National Statistical Coordination Board in the Region, during the Panindugan cable TV talk show of the Philippine Information Agency recently.

LEYECO II which serves the regional center, Tacloban City and the municipalities of Palo and Babatngon in the province of Leyte , consistently posted the cheapest rate at P4.90 and P5.43 in 2004 and 2005, Ms. Paran informed.

LEYECO II accounts for the biggest share, or 25.8 percent of the total power distributed in the Region.

Ms. Paran said that the Region’s average system rate or the selling price of power from the electric cooperative to consumers is 5.88 per Kilowatt Hour in 2005. This, she said, is higher by P0.56 over the P5.32 recorded in 2004.

LEYECO V posted the second lowest power rate at P5.54 and coming closely in the third position is SAMELCO I with an average system rate posted at P5.77 while LEYECO IV posted the fourth cheapest, at P6.03.

Meanwhile, the province of Biliran has the highest electricity rate in Eastern Visayas which means that electricity in the province is the most expensive at P6.19 and P6.80 per kilowatt hour in 2004 and 2005, respectively, Ms. Paran revealed.

This, she said, is largely due to the low consumption rate resulting from lack of industries and commercial establishments plus the low population in the province. Most of the consumers of electricity in the province of Biliran are residential consumers, Ms. Paran said.

The municipalities comprising LEYECO III rank second most expensive at P6.00 and P6.85 per kilowatt hour, in 2004 and 2005 respectively. (PIA 8) [top]
