Commentary: At odds with development the NPA way

By Aurora J. Casimpan

Tacloban City (10 October) -- What really is the reason for the existence of an extremist organization like the New People's Army? Well, it is understood that it is a communist organization working for the welfare of the people. In other words, upliftment or betterment of the lives of people is their goal.

Also, it is understood that said organization will not hesitate to use violence if it is the only instrument used in the furtherance of its goals. People are just adjunct of the state and so it doesn't matter if they are used, discarded or even killed while the organization struggles to uplift their lives. Rightly, properties belong to the people and so morally, it can be destroyed anytime.

This NPA ideology is downright confusing. If the goal is the welfare of the people then why deprive the same with a clear program of development?

The case of the recent destruction of structures of the Bacolod City International Airport in Silay City, Negros Occidental is an example of the duplicity of the NPA. The development of the said airport would have brought jobs and generated income for the community. Of course, the dastardly acts will not stop the government's determination to bring development to the countryside but it has certainly slowed the pace of development. Had the NPAs been true to their ideology as vanguards of the people's welfare, the economic returns from the airport project should have been realized earlier.

To date, the rubble of the destruction have put a dent in the onward development of the area. From the way the NPA brazenly goes about sowing chaos and attacking development-oriented projects of the government shows their disregard for the people's welfare. And with such acts the real motive of the NPA is unmasked.

Does the NPA exist because of an ideology or raiding and collecting revolutionary taxes have become their way of life? (PIA-8) [top]
