BFAR observes 43rd Fish Conservation Week
by AT Cabig
Cagayan de Oro City (13 October) -- The annual celebration of Fish Conservation Week reels off on October 16 which is World Food Day.
Proclamation No. 176 signed by the late President Diosdado Macapagal on October 21, 1963, pronounced the third week of October as Fish Conservation Week to emphasize to stakeholders the importance of conservation and proper management of fishery resources.
This year, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 10, headed by Regional Director Arlene B. Pantanosas, would once again share with the public the message on the need for protection and conservation of coastal and fisheries resources.
With this year's theme, "May Buhay ang Dagat" and the slogan, “Maunlad ang Pangisdaan Kapag Matatag ang Pangasiwaan”, the fish conservation week celebration will be from October 15 to 21.
Various activities will be conducted to give more significance and impact to the celebration. These include Public Information Day, Grand Opening, Coastal and Fishery Resource Enhancement Day, Technology & Livelihood Day, Fishery Law Enforcement Day, Closing and Awarding.
A major event on the Grand Opening on October 16 is the nationwide simultaneous launching of the “Fishes of the Ocean” On-the-Spot Mural Painting which is BFAR’s bid to break the Guinness World Record for the longest painting on a continuous canvas. To be held at the Macasanding gymnasium, it will be participated in by 200 artists, age 10 and up, coming from various schools in the city.
BFAR hopes this celebration would serve as a venue for generating more support from other government agencies, the private sectors, civic groups and other sectors of society, both for conservation of our coastal and fisheries resources, and for the attainment of food security in our country.
