NPA liquidates barangay councilman, nephew

Tacloban City (October 18) -- A band of New People’s Army led by communist terrorist leader Robert Fortaleza alias Rex/Noble killed a barangay councilor and his nephew at Sitio Patening, Barangay Donghol, Ormoc City at around 11:00 o’clock in the evening of October 10, 2006.

Lt. Col. Lope Dagoy, Commanding Officer of 19th Infantry (Commando) Battalion of the 8th Infantry Division, Philippine Army, identified the victims as Barangay Councilor Mario Singson, 38 years old, and his nephew Renato Singson, 25 years old, both residents of Brgy Mahayag, Ormoc City.

The reports stated that Councilor Singson and his nephew suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the different parts of their bodies which caused their instantaneous death. According to sources, the Councilor has been receiving a number of death threats and extortion letters from CTL Fortaleza asking 10 percent revolutionary tax to be sourced from the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) of Barangay Mahayag. Singzon, however, continued to ignore the demands of the Communist Terrorists. Singson was known to be a keen supporter to the government’s socio-economic development programs in the barangay.

Troops of the 19th Infantry Battalion immediately conducted pursuit operations along the reported route of withdrawal and established checkpoints along the road of Barangay Donghol to track down and entrap the perpetrators.

Major General Rodrigo F. Maclang, Commanding General of the 8ID extended his personal condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family of Honorable Councilor Mario Singson who risked his own life for the sake of democracy and rule of law. He is a hero in his own right, General Maclang said, and he upheld the rule of law up to his last breath by not giving any support to the enemy of the state who continuously sow havoc and terror in the community.

He called on the people of the insurgency stricken areas in Region 8 not to support the communist terrorists as this will mean allowing the insurgents to continue their terroristic acts.

Once again, General Maclang challenged Mr. Santiago Salas and his cohorts KARAPATAN-SB KATUNGOD, a known Communist Front Organization who hides in the guise of an Independent Human Rights monitoring body to speak up in the open and condemn this heinous crime perpetrated by the Communist Terrorist New People’s Army.

This action, General Maclang continued, is a gross violation to the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL). General Maclang said he is sure that as expected, Mr. Salas and KARAPATAN-SB KATUNGOD are ready with their flimsy alibis to defend these ruthless terrorists who have been nothing but an added burden to the people.
