PIA Press Release

Region 8 special degree program for information practitioners starts this trimester

Tacloban City (October 26) -- The special degree program aimed to professionalize the media, information officers and school paper advisers starts this trimester.

The orientation for those who are intending to avail of the Special Degree Program is scheduled on Friday, October 27, 1:30 in the afternoon at the PIA Regional Office. This will be conducted by Dr. Edward Chua and PIA Director Olive Tiu.

This was announced after the meeting held on October 25, 2006 at the Philippine Information Agency Regional Office 8, among Commission on Higher Education Region 8 Director Ma. Rita Ortiz, Dr. Edward Chua, president of the Asian Development Foundation College in Tacloban City and PIA 8 Director Olive Tiu.

Those who will avail of the special program leading to a baccalaureate degree in Freelance Journalism or Broadcasting will be able to finish their course on or before one year depending on the modules they will have to take as will be recommended by the assessment office of the Asia Development Foundation College.

The three personalities involved in the project emphasized that the students who will be accepted in this special program must sign a waiver to complete the course within the period of one year otherwise, this will only become a training and as such, the subject taken in this special program will not be credited in other schools. The curriculum for this special program was approved by CHED which is the same agency which will issue the Special Order upon completion of the course.

The special program, which is the first of its kind, is good only for the three trimesters or for one year and so those who are interested to avail of the program are enjoined to enroll this trimester or they will forego the special chance of earning a degree, Director Ortiz said.

Director Tiu said that the information officers of the different local government units and the different government agencies and the school paper advisers are also enjoined to take the course in order to equip them with the needed skills to carry out the tasks that their designations require.

The Professionalization of the Media project is the brainchild of PIA 8 Director Olive Tiu but she emphasized that this project will not be made possible without the support of Dr. Chua, Director Ortiz and Dir. Sol Matugas of DepEd 8. (PIA 8) [top]
