Comelec, IBP Biliran forge agreement to conduct voters' education program

Naval, Biliran (29 November) -- In order to attain political maturity among voters and ensure a free, orderly and honest elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the province of Biliran through its Provincial Elections Supervisor (PES) Atty. Sabino Mejarito and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Biliran Chapter here in the province through its President, Atty. Meljohn dela Peņa entered into a memorandum of agreement and joined hands in the implementation of the Voters' Education Program dubbed "Boto Ko, Ikararangal Ko".

This was revealed by Atty. Mejarito in an interview with PIA saying that the program aims to educate the citizens in the province to become responsible and matured voters, well informed of their rights and duties and likewise knowledgeable of the electoral processes and procedures.

Actually, he said, the Voters' Education program of the COMELEC was launched in the province of Biliran in November 29, last year and its implementation started in January this year.

Furthermore, he said that initially at least they have started the information campaign in the municipalities of Culaba, Biliran, Maripipi and Kawayan and as of now, the information campaign being done by Comelec in Kawayan and Maripipi are still on-going.

Realizing the need to intensify the campaign in the province, the IBP Biliran Chapter volunteered and commit themselves to assist the Comelec as Voters' Education advocates to effect political maturity among voters and attain political change through responsible voting, hence, the memorandum of agreement, to achieve the goals of the program.

IBP-Biliran, an organization of lawyers in the province of Biliran who are known for their impartiality and integrity, will likewise assist the provincial Comelec in the implementation of the provisions of the Omnibus Election Code to include the resolutions, orders and instructions of the Commission for purposes of achieving an honest, orderly and peaceful elections (HOPE).

IBP-Biliran chapter will also assist the Comelec office in the recruitment and training of the Comelec Community Volunteers (CCV).

The CCV will become part of the pool of voter educators and resource speakers that is organized by Comelec and the IBP in the province of Biliran tasked conduct a continuing voters education activities, barangay pulong-pulong, symposia in every barangay provincewide.

The target audience of the barangay pulong-pulong to be conducted will include all sectors in the community such as students, teachers, government employees, elective officials and other groups. (PIA-Biliran) [top]
