LandBank, DENR sign MOA on adopt-a-watershed program

Tacloban City (April 17) -– The Land Bank of the Philippines represented by VP Ruel Z. Romarate and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region 8 represented by Mr. RTD Ricardo Tomol, signed Monday, a memorandum of agreement for the rehabilitation and protection of the Binahaan Watershed in Leyte under the Adopt-A-Watershed Program.

VP Romarate bared that the mother MOA has already been signed by the DENR Secretary and the Chairman of Land Bank, late last year. The Adopt-A-Watershed Program is in fulfillment of the thrust of Land Bank to assist in countryside development. This is also in connection with Land Bank’s corporate social responsibility to help protect water and environment.

The adoption of the Binahaan Watershed is the second watershed which is being assisted by Land Bank, VP. Romarate said. The first is the Watershed at Bago City in Negros Occidental.

Binahaan Watershed is a very important watershed as it is the source of water for Tacloban and several other municipalities in Leyte. It traverses Ormoc City, Dagami, Jaro, Pastrana, Tanauan, Palo, Tolosa and Tabon Tabon, all in Leyte.

The Adopt-A-Watershed Program covered in the MOA, is situated in Barangay Camono-an, Dagami, Leyte. The project will run for three years with a total cost of P76,420.50, for the 48,065 seedlings to rehabilitate a total area of two hectares.

The MOA signing which was done at the Ritz Tower de Leyte was witnessed by Dagami Lady Mayor Esperanza Ortega, LMWD General Manager Nestor Villasin and PIA Director Olive Tiu.

Mayor Ortega expressed her joy and gratitude that the Land Bank of the Philippines has embarked on such an undertaking considering that there is really a need to rehabilitate the area because of illegal logging in the past and kaingin.

General Manager Villasin said that he is also grateful because the Binahaan Watershed is the source of water which LMWD distributes to the end consumers in several municipalities and one city, Tacloban, all in Leyte.

DENR Regional Technical Director of the Forest Management Services Ricardo Tomol thanked the Land Bank for the support and the corporate social responsibility which made it walk the talk in the spirit of volunteerism to achieve the rehabilitation of the less vegetated watershed areas in order to improve the water yield capacity.
