Sto. Tomas town celebrates Earth Day

Davao City (26 April) -- Sto. Tomas joined the International Earth Day Celebration last April 22, 2007 with the theme : "Stewardship-in-Action" The said event was affirmed by the Local Government Unit of Sto. Tomas spearheaded by the municipal officials, barangay captains, employees, non government agencies, business sectors, religious sectors and other line agencies.

Activities such as fun run dubbed as Ikalimang Dagan Para sa Kinaiyahan has been organized to mark its significance which aims to specifically heighten the awareness of the people of Sto. Tomas to unite and act as one in the preservation of Mother Earth through the implementation of the Ecological Solid Management Program in the locality.

In the short program at the Municipal Ecological Park and Ecology Center was held following the fun run activity, awards been given to the Guest Speaker, Ms. Roberta T. Cabazares-Executive Director of Kinaiyahan Foundation Inc. for her untiring support in the implementation of the Republic Act 9003 known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Program and to the CC / JRC Liner to their wholehearted support to the local government's environmental programs.

Mr. Joel Z. Bayanay, Municipal Administrator, in his speech proudly stressed the upshot of the implementation of Republic Act 9003 in Sto. Tomas thereby known in the entire Region XI as the Model Site."Naay kwarta sa basura" as the Municipal Administrator said during the program. He was pleased to announce the products made out of the garbage waste.

On the other hand, Mayor Maximo Estela lauded the people behind the success in the implementation of Ecological Solid Waste Management Program in Sto. Tomas." This is an opportune time for us to respond to the fitting call for everyone of us to participate and help in the preservation of the environment" Mayor Maximo Estela said. (MIO-Sto.
