Iloilo City (4 June) -- Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) Director Davinio Catbagan said that Visayas, Mindanao, Masbate and Palawan are totally free of the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD). Visayas and Mindanao have been declared as FMD-free fro more than a decade now, while Luzon, for more than a year.
This was recently reaffirmed by the World Organization for Animal Health during the 75th annual general session of the International Committee held in Paris.
Dir. Catbagan said BAI is now preparing and working on getting the National Capital Region, batangas, Bulacan, Laguna and Nueva Ecija, to be declared as FMD-free. He added that BAI would need P50 million to fund its programs to ensure that the country would stay free of FMD.
"If we can pass the May 2008 deliberations, then the whole country can be free declared FMD-free, and that is something we can take advantage of," Catbagan said.
BAI is now pursuing its thrusts of strengthening quarantine controls, intensifying information campaign drives and establishing ties with the local government units.
He also said that they are now focusing on NCR and the four provinces mentioned, by monitoring all movements and transfers of animals from one province to another and putting up strategic check points to ensure that no unchecked animal will be smuggled to and fro. (PIA 6) [top]
