Tree-planting caps CARP anniversary fete in East Samar

Tacloban City (July 6) -- Officials and staff of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in Eastern Samar conducted a Tree Planting Activity on June 29, as a culminating activity for the month-long celebration of the 19th Anniversary of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).

This, according to DAR Information Officer Jose Alsmith Soria and DAR East Samar PIO Jo Fabile, is despite the postponement of the nationwide simultaneous Tree Planting activity in connection with the Greening Philippines Program of the national government.

The Philippine Army which is the lead Agency issued an advisory regarding the postponement two days before the June 29 nationwide Tree Planting Activity, but considering that Tree Planting activity has already been a tradition among DAR officials and personnel as a closing activity to the CARP anniversary celebration every June, Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman issued a memorandum to just proceed with it as scheduled.

The Philippine Army advisory regarding the postponement was very clear that if it is already impossible for the cooperating agencies to defer the Tree Planting activity, they may proceed with the activity.

Provincial Agrarian Reform Officer Oscar Reloj led his personnel in planting 100 seedlings of mahogany along the national highway from Barangay Hindang to Barangay Libuton in Borongan City.

PARO Reloj said that the original plan was for the Tree Planting activity to reach up to the main gate of the Eastern Samar State University, but the activity was cut short because of the lack of planting materials.

Joining the DAR Eastern Samar in this activity were the personnel and officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources based in Borongan City and the members of the Philippine Army Reserve Command (ARESCOM), Jo Fabile informed further.

As agreed upon, the maintenance of the seedlings planted will rest on the care of the respective barangay officials in the host community. (PIA 8) [top]
